CHICO — The idea of a rose garden near the Chico Area Recreation and Park District building will be among items discussed by the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission.

Proposed by CARD at the request of Chico resident Marilyn Warrens, the rose garden will be discussed at the meeting, which starts at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Chico City Council Chambers, 421 Main St.

CARD leases the area at 545 Vallombrosa Ave. from the city, so needs its permission for any improvements.

While a rose garden has been discussed by CARD and by the Park Commission, the garden is still in the discussion stage, although the CARD board has favored the proposal.

The garden is being proposed between the Chico Community Center and Big Chico Creek, in what CARD calls the meadow. The CARD board sees promise as a site for weddings and special events.

Warrens started her quest for a site for the rose garden in 2001, according to CARD, and has proposed to cover the cost of the project, within reason. She has set aside $100,000.

Warrens said the Butte Rose Society will help with the project as well.

Input from the public will be taken during the meeting.

The commission will also talk about street trees, and approve new officers.
