The Dell’Arte Company’s annual holiday show returns for its 33rd year with a madcap adaptation of Victor Herbert’s classic family tale, Babes in Toyland. Dell’Arte International is delighted to infuse the 2013 holiday season with their one-of-a kind comedy and energetic physical performance style.
Thwarted in his attempts to win the heart of Mary Contrary, the vile and exasperated Barnaby threatens to destroy all of Toyland. It falls to our unlikely heroine Jane and her friends to restore peace to the land. Jane and her kaleidoscopic crew venture into the dangerous Forgotten Forest and take us on a journey fraught with laughter and suspense! Brimming with whimsical characters, lickety-split chase scenes, enchanting music and soaring physical comedy, this beloved tale is sure to captivate and deliver loads of laughter to children of all ages.
Babes in Toyland is directed by DAI producing artistic director Michael Fields. Original music is by Tim Gray, whose melodies you may recognize from Mad River Festival favorites, The Comedy of Errors and Blue Lake: the Opera as well as last year’s holiday show, The Fish In My Head. The stellar Dell’Arte Company cast includes Jerome Yorke and Andrew Eldredge, last seen as the twin Dromios in DAI’s 2013 summer smash Shakespearean hit, The Comedy of Errors.
DAI is proud to announce that admission to Babes in Toyland is free for most of the performances, thanks to the generous support of local schools, Pierson Building Center, Wildberries Marketplace, Green Diamond and California Redwood Company, Renner Petroleum, Suddenlink, Ironside Metal Works, ArtPlace America, The Irvine Foundation, Redbud Theatre, C. Crane Company, Umpqua Bank, and Stephanie Joy of Re/Max Humboldt Realty.
The show will tour throughout Northern California and Southern Oregon with stops in Cave Junction, Orick, Point Arena, Redway, Scotia, Bridgeville, Willow Creek, Hoopa, Burnt Ranch, McKinleyville, Trinidad, Eureka, and Arcata. Dell’Arte strives to make family holiday entertainment available to both rural and urban communities that rarely see live professional theatre. Venues range from large, lofty theatres to local elementary school cafeterias. The annual DAI holiday show reaches approximately 5,000 to 8,000 people each year, including many school-age children.
The audience is asked to contribute non-perishable food items, which the cast collects and donates to local food banks in collaboration with local non-profit, Food for People.
