To the Editor:

June 11 through June 14 marked an eventful extended weekend for Southern Humboldt Little League. Our community was fortunate to be the host of the California District 26 Tournament of Champions. Sixteen teams from Humboldt and Del Norte counties competed in a single elimination tournament to take home the championship banner to their home league. Teams competed from Arcata, Blue Lake/Fieldbrook, Del Norte, Eel River, Eureka, Klamath/Trinity, McKinleyville, Redwood Empire, and Southern Humboldt Little Leagues.

This event could not have been made possible without the help and support of many wonderful people. Firstly, to the volunteers who came to the field clean-up day we held before the tournament. It was the same weekend as the Summer Arts Fair, which was tough on the volunteers but they came out to support the preparation anyway. That coupled with flash flooding on the fields made it a challenge. My sincere appreciation goes out to Corky and Scott Coffelt, John Van Meter, Jade Valk, Carrie Albonico, Southern Humboldt Women’s Softball League, Pedro Rodriguez, Joe Musto, Ayden and Riley Gallagher, Rick Todd, Brett and Wyatt Gratzel, the Paula family, the Vandenack family, Craig and Luke Johns, Brett and CJ Van Meter, Joe Valk, Conner and Cameron Messenger, Robert Scarlett, Tivoli and Garrhett Wiley and her nephews Jason and James, and Nate Parkinson for his help with the forklift from Parkinson Building Supply.

Special thanks for their tournament dedication goes out to Cara Knostman for running the snack shack and to all of the people who worked a shift during the tournament, Tivoli Wiley for coordinating all of the umpiring staff, Janice Coffelt and Reuben Mood for accepting the responsibility of being the head score keepers, Brien Smith for repairing our scoreboard, Whitethorn School for the use of their P.A. system, South Fork High School Girl’s Softball and South Fork High School Boy’s Baseball for the use of their temporary fencing, and to our fabulous umpiring staff: Garry McQuillan, Pedro Rodriguez, Ron Wiley, Randy Allee, Jordan Jumpshot, Jerry, Travis Genzoli, Steve Fry, Rob Then, Richard Murray and Dan Osborne. Thanks also to the Southern Humboldt Babe Ruth Athletics for their part in field preparation before each game and to KMUD for their presence during the tournament.

It was a lot of work, which equaled a lot of fun. To have two of our local teams, the Select Builders Dodgers and the Lotus Mountain Giants get home field advantage and to bring teams and families into Redway from all over two counties was worth all of the challenges.

With sincerest appreciation,

Suzanne Van Meter, President

Southern Humboldt Little League
