OROVILLE — A trial date will be set for the March 17 stabbing in downtown Chico.

There will be a hearing to set the date after Rodolfo Martinez, 20, of Gridley, waived his right to a preliminary hearing today in Butte County Superior Court, according to supervising deputy district attorney Mark Murphy.

Martinez is charged with a felony count of assault likely to cause great bodily injury. The charge stems from a reported gang-related fight in a parking lot on West Second and Salem streets where the victim suffered a superficial upper-body stab wound. Police arrested Martinez a block away.

Martinez also faces an allegation that it was a gang-related crime. If proven, it could lead to an additional five years in prison.

There will be a July 14 hearing for further arraignment and to set a trial date.

Martinez remains in custody.
