CHICO — The American Cancer Society, together with presenting sponsors North Valley Advanced Imaging and North State Radiology, will hold the 2011 Chico Relay for Life today and Sunday.

Today, teams of volunteers will gather at Pleasant Valley High School for a 24-hour celebration in honor of cancer survivors, to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer, and pledge to fight back.

The event is open to the public and will start at 10 a.m. with the traditional “survivors” lap.” There will be live entertainment, games, karaoke and continued activities throughout the day.

The luminaria ceremony, another Relay for Life tradition, will take place as the sun sets today. Candles will be set alight inside small bags decorated with messages of love and remembrance to illuminate the darkened track.

Proceeds benefit research, advocacy and programs to assist cancer patients. Raffle tickets for a Green Bay Packers jersey signed by Aaron Rodgers will be on sale throughout the day, with the drawing taking place Sunday morning.
