First Fig Gallery’s annual memorial day weekend Wine Tasting and Open House will be May 28 and 29 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday only. The gallery is located at 545 Shelter Cove Road, Whitethorn, 14 miles west of Redway.

First Fig Gallery will be showing the work of artist/photographer Tom Cole. Cole lived for awhile in Briceland, and spent 16 years living in India and Nepal. Presently located in the Bay Area, Tom Cole has developed a reputation for his ‘eye’ with antique tribal rugs and textile art from Central Asia. Cole is also a frequent contributor to HALI, a London based publication dealing exclusively with rugs and textile art from all over the world. He is the author of two books on antique Tibetan rugs, and has also written entertaining and informative travelogues, recounting travels to various locations in Asia, including Lhasa and Northern Afghanistan weeks before the Taliban took over in 1997. Find out more on his website (www.tcoletribalrugs.com).

Last year he decided to return to India to see places he had not previously seen and to take photographs. Upon returning, he mounted an inaugural photography event at his private gallery space in San Rafael, and it became apparent to some of his rug/textile clients that he also has an eye for images from that region too.

To be exhibited this year are images from his latest trip this spring as well as a few highlights from the journey last year. First Fig Gallery is proud to present Tom Cole’s photography at this wonderful two-day event.

MaryLou Scavarada will have her new book of poetry on display and copies will be for sale with all of the proceeds going to Hospice. This is a beautiful book of poems written for her mother in the last months of her life. The title, Mother Lode, is about her personal journey living with a loved one, a mother who is dying, the process of letting go and about community coming together. Her poetry is a beautiful tribute to Lorraine Talbow who was loved by many and is deeply missed by all. It is an honor to have Mary Lou present her book and to be with us on this special Memorial Day Weekend.

Tasha McKee, owner and Winemaker at Whitethorn Winery will be presenting Pinot Noir tastings, including barrel tasting, current releases and library wines. In the barrel tasting you will be able to compare new and used oak from two different vineyards. There will be live music played by family and friends of Whitethorn. Come join us for art, music, wine, and light hors d’oeuvres. See you there.
