ORLAND — Unusual circumstances led the Glenn County Sheriff”s Office to conduct a public auction on the Orland courthouse steps Wednesday morning involving 10 acres of land west of the city.

Sheriff Larry Jones said the Orland Unit Water User”s Group got a judgment against the current owners in the amount of about $90,000.

The users group entered a winning bid on the property of $87,527, a county official said.

The land is undeveloped except for an old building that is reportedly in disrepair. The former owners are eligible to reclaim the property if they can satisfy the judgment within one year. However, any improvement made to the property in the interim will have to be removed.

Jones said his department hasn”t had to run an auction for several years and enlisted the help of a retired deputy sheriff from Sacramento County to oversee it.
