CHICO — A new series of free story times for elementary school children will begin today at Chico library with the reading of “The Secret River,” by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, a 1956 Newbery Honor title.

Beginning at 3 p.m., the read-aloud events will also feature an activity.

Lyon Books is sponsoring the new story times and is offering new releases that may not be available yet at the library. The store will also donate a copy of the book to the library.

The next story time is Feb. 24, featuring “Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters” by Barak Obama, and “Sit-In: How Four Friends Stood Up By Sitting Down” by Caldecott Award winners Andrea and Brian Pinkney. The books chosen for February are in honor of Black History Month.

These story times will take place every other Thursday and will be held in the children”s room at Chico library, 1108 Sherman Ave. A schedule of the story times is at lyonbooks.com.
