RED BLUFF — Law enforcement was still searching as of deadline for the identity of a woman killed at 2:39 a.m. Thursday, while walking on northbound Interstate 5 in Red Bluff.

The woman was walking in the far right lane of the three-lane section of I-5 just south of North Main Street, when she was hit by a big rig driven by Steven Jackson, 52, of San Leandro.

Jackson, who was driving north in the same lane as the woman about 55 mph, saw her but was unable to stop his vehicle in time, said California Highway Patrol officer Phillip Mackintosh. Jackson was uninjured in the accident.

The remains were in bad enough condition that officers were unable to tell how old the victim was, Mackintosh said.

The Tehama County Coroner was awaiting confirmation of a possible identification and would need to notify next of kin before a name could be released, CHP Officer Ken Reineman said late Thursday afternoon.
