Little League kicks off season Saturday

Southern Humboldt Little League is looking forward to another exciting season. Opening Day is this Saturday, April 3, at Wood Field in Redway. All are welcome to come down and enjoy a fun day in the sun supporting teams from Redway, Whitethorn, Weott, Leggett, and Alderpoint. There are many changes and improvements to the league planned for 2010, including many new additions to the menu at the snack shack.

There are 6 divisions this year for boys and girls from 4 to 12 years old. There are 7 tee ball teams with kids ranging from 4-6. This year marks the return of the Coach pitch division in the Minor league with kids from 5-7. Four teams will be competing in the player pitch minor division. These 6-8 year olds are the prospects that are looking forward to being drafted to the Majors division in the next year or two. The four teams that comprise the Majors division for 2010 are the Athletics and the Giants of Redway, the Lost Coast Pirates of Whitethorn and the Dodgers; a combined team of players from Leggett and Weott.

This season features two teams of girls’ softball who will compete county wide in two divisions. The Phillies in the Minor division has players aging from 7-11. Returning in the Majors division are the Southern Humboldt Angels. This is a competitive team with girls ages 9-12 and is looking forward to a lot of success this year. Both of these teams are hosting five home games in Redway. Watch for dates and come out and watch these energetic and very exciting games.

Support for Southern Humboldt Little League comes in two flavors of delicious coffee, which is now available locally. Roasted by Signature, SHLL coffee features the Majors blend, a dark roast; and the Minors blend, a medium roast. Look for it in town at a variety of businesses.
