Mendocino County deputies on a routine patrol on U.S. 101 at Bell Springs Road seized 20 pounds of processed pot and a little over $99,000 in cash on Saturday, April 4.
At a little after midnight, deputies noticed three vehicles parked alongside the road with several people standing around. They stopped to ask if any assistance was needed. As they approached the vehicles, deputies detected a strong odor of marijuana emitting from an Acura occupied by Anthony and Keren Gaines, ages 39 and 19 respectively, and both of Los Angeles.
A similar odor was detected coming from another of the vehicles, a Chevrolet Suburban, that was occupied by Thomas Ganey, age 19 of Piercy, Ali Nofal, age 33 of Joliet, Illinois, Mutasim Odeh, 34, of Chicago, and Demes M. Demes, age 28 of Cleveland, Ohio.
Deputies detained the above-named individuals and also Crystal Robinson, age 32 of Fortuna, and Tahoe Stugard, age 34, of Garberville, the occupants of the third vehicle, a Toyota Tacoma.
A search of the vehicles yielded the marijuana and cash. All eight individuals were booked into the Mendocino County Jail and the investigation is continuing.
