SANTA ANA, Calif.—An Orange County attorney has been sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison for a bribery scheme to get a criminal case dismissed against one of his clients.

The U.S. attorney's office said in a statement that 70-year-old Lawrence Anthony Witsoe received the sentence Monday.

Witsoe and co-defendant Aaron Scott Vigil, who was a Rialto police officer, were convicted earlier this year of conspiring to solicit a $2,500 bribe from one of Witsoe's clients. The client was charged with assault, and in exchange for the bribe, Vigil was to tell the district attorney's office that the client had been cooperating with him and federal agents in drug investigations.

Vigil was already sentenced to two years and nine months for his role in the scheme.
