On Friday the South Fork JV boys traveled to Hoopa to take on the Warriors.
The Warriors came out playing the same 3-2 zone defense that the Cubs had seen in Eureka and this time South Fork was ready for it and they were able to take a 3 point lead into the half.
In the third quarter Hoopa came out more aggressive on defense and they were able to dominate South Fork into the fourth where the Cubs found themselves down 17 points with 4 minutes to go.
The Cubs started pressing hard at that point and were able to cut the lead to 10 with two minutes remaining. The Cubs were forced to foul to get the ball back and the strategy paid off as Kevin Vandenack hit a lay-up to put South Fork up by one with less than a minute left.
South Fork committed a foul with 5 seconds remaining and sent Hoopa to the free throw line where they tied the score on their first shot but then Hoopa committed a lane violation on the second.
A Hoopa player lost control and slammed the ball drawing a technical foul, which their coach followed with a second technical sending Kevin Vandenack to the line for 4 free throws.
”It doesn't do any good to get mad at the refs,” Coach Todd Vandenack said. The Cubs finished the game winning by six, keeping their composure as Hoopa lost theirs, in a game that looked like it was headed to overtime.
”It was a really good week,” Coach Vandenack Said, “The kids are feeling pretty good.”
