Summer fun

REDWAY >> The Southern Humboldt Family Resource Center invites kids from eight to 13 to sign up for a two-week Summer Food and Fitness Adventure Program beginning next Monday, June 16, at Redway Elementary School.

With the guidance of instructor Gina Paine, kids will learn cooking skills and collect tasty, healthful recipes, as well as enjoying fun physical activities to get and stay fit led by instructors from SoHum Fitness.

Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, June 16-19 and June 23-26.

The program is sponsored by the Summer Youth Program of the Humboldt Area Foundation's Grantmaking Partnership. Fee for the program is $60, and some scholarships are available.

Registration forms are available at the Redway School office. For more information, contact the FRC at 923-1147.

This year for the first time the monthly playgroups for young children, infants through five years old, will continue during the summer months.

Playgroups are held weekly at the South Fork East Campus in Miranda on Thursdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and at the Shelter Cove Community Center on Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

An infant and toddler playgroup on the first Friday of the month at the Early Head Start building on Empire Drive in Redway will also be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Friday, Aug. 1 and Friday, Sept. 5, although there will be no playgroup in Redway in July.

This playgroup is free and family members can accompany the child. Snacks will be provided.

For more information, call Lisa Henninger at the FRC at 923-1147.

The FRC is looking for a new Americorps/AFACTR member to develop programs and work with the community beginning this September.

"AFACTR" stands for Assisting Families to Access Change Through Resources. Its purpose is "to support a positive family and community environment for children" with a variety of programs, classes, and activities. An AFACTR member has been an essential part of the FRC staff for the past five years.

Applicants must commit to a year of service. They receive training, a living allowance, and educational benefits.

The FRC would prefer to have an AFACTR member who is already a Southern Humboldt resident and who has local housing and is familiar with our local community needs and culture, said FRC director Christina Huff.

Anyone interested in joining AFACTR should contact the Redwood Community Action Agency, at 269-2020 or by email at afactr@rcaa.org. For more information about applying for an assignment at the FRC, call Huff at 707- 923-1147.
