The team qualified two weeks ago at the Western Regional Championships at UC Davis’s home lake, Bell Aqua, in Rio Linda where they hosted 10 schools from the Western Region. All 10 schools brought their best skiers to participate at the regional event and to qualify for the national event. UC Davis placed second this year at the regional event and qualified for the second year in a row to get the chance to compete at the National Collegiate Water Ski Championships. Last year the team also placed second in regional and placed fifth in the nation at LSU in Louisiana where the 2012 National tournament was hosted.
This year the team once again competed against the top schools in the nation but this year San Diego State University hosted this prestigious event. There are four qualifiers from each regional event across the country in order to make up the nationals that consist of the Eastern region, South Central region, Midwest region and the Western region.
The final top ten outcome at this year’s national event saw UC Davis on top of the podium with a 1st place win, Western Washington 2nd, Texas State 3rd, San Diego State 4th, Clemson 5th, Iowa State 6th, Chico State 7th, North Carolina 8th, UCLA 9th, and LSU in 10th.
