This year an all-school assembly was called. Mrs. Kelley, the track coach, announced track awards for last year’s two junior high track and field students: Rudy Arias (then 7th grade, now 8th grade) and Sequoia Braham (then 8th grade, now 9th grade). Each received several awards in track and field from the various meets they attended last year. Then a special appearance was made by the Leggett Valley Panther to the enjoyment of all. The assembly ended with several students and teachers wishing everyone a positive year.
Preschool had a huge turnout this year with 12 students enrolling. When Jackee Allen, preschool coordinator, was asked what was covered on the first day, she replied, “We covered how to be safe, responsible, and kind today.” Preschool acquaints children with social skills that help them be successful students when they go on to kindergarten.
Leggett has a new K-1 teacher this year, Jennifer Wilson. Ms. Wilson hails from Weott, and has subbed for many years at Leggett. Leggett Valley School is happy to have her.
Leggett also has seven new students, three of which are returning.
Back-To-School-Night was on Sept. 19 and was well attended. Parents were encouraged to come to an informational meeting with superintendent Tom Puskarich. He explained about the new Common Core Standards and the new testing procedures.
The junior high held their annual pizza fundraiser and car wash. The students and Mrs. Kelley appreciated all the people who helped them raise money for a possible field study trip in the spring to Yosemite. They are currently selling Uncle Jerry’s Ts for funds. See a junior high student or Mrs. Kelley, if you want to support them.
The K-8 has been trying to raise funds for updated and better technology. With the new Common Core Standards and assessments, the students will need to have more usable and updated computers. The teachers in the elementary (K-8) have been raising funds for this purpose since the beginning of last year. This year they have been having an ongoing yard sale at Toph’s near the Benbow Golf Course. It has been very successful and they hope to do it once a month in the future.
