The first month of school is complete and the numbers are in. Redway Elementary had the best attendance in the district for the first month of school with 97% of student attending.

Agnes J. Johnson Elementary comes in at a close second with 96.5% of students in attendance. Every day counts in a child’s education.

Every day a student misses school, s/he falls behind her/his peers because s/he must make up missed learning and catch up with the new learning at the same time. Studies prove that poor attendance affects a child’s confidence in their academic abilities and also affects their relationships with their peers.

Patterns of school attendance begin early. A student who misses 18 days over the course of a school year misses out on 10% of the curriculum. That is ten percent lost learning, which causes students to fall further and further behind every year. The more students fall behind, the less likely they will be to want to attend school, which becomes a vicious cycle.
