Most of Leggett Valley School’s students (K-12) hopped on buses Friday, October 20, to observe and learn from a rare event: the beaching of a 70-foot Blue Whale in Fort Bragg. Wilma Zari graciously allowed the school children onto her property so they could see the unfortunate animal up close. At the time of viewing, the whale had bloated up like a balloon, but much of the original animal was still intact. From the vantage point of a bluff overlooking the site, students could clearly see the whale’s baleen, belly and tail fin. Here, a biologist gives the students some background information on the whale and answered questions. Leggett Valley School would like to thank everyone who made this field trip a wonderful, if sometimes smelly, educational experience.
