Roy was born in the Bronx on Dec. 13, 1959 to Rhea and Herbert Glicksman. Roy grew up in Long Island, graduated from Comsewogue High School, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in environmental studies with a minor in business at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1981. He participated in work study projects at the Rachel Carson College, including a study on acid rain and environmental issues world wide.
After graduation, he hitchhiked across the country and explored California until deciding to settle in Garberville in 1983. He worked at the Greenhouse Day Care center, the Woodrose Cafe, as a teacher’s aid at Redway School and with the California Department of Forestry as a Fire Fighter 1. He attended many fundraisers and sports events including the Redwood Summer Games.
In Grass Valley he worked with Cramner Engineering as a lab technician. He returned to New York and completed an OSHA training program in hazardous waste management and worked at various sites. He was a stock trader for a year and continued to follow the market. His love of animals led him to a job with a farm and petting zoo bringing animals into the city for children’s parties.
Returning to his cherished redwoods in 1999, he continued to work throughout his battle with colon cancer and hiked most of the trails in this territory with his dogs, Tess and Trixy.
Roy was a cantor in his synagogue in New York in his youth and was an active member of our local B’nai Ha-Aretz.
He died peacefully at Garberville Hospital on June 27 after a one-day stay, with his dear friends at his side. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert, and by his infant son, Christopher.
We all love you so much, Roy, and will always cherish your warm, friendly smile and quick sense of humor.
Roy enjoyed the fellowship at the New Wine Church where a potluck celebration of his life will be held in the Meadows Business Park, at 1180 Evergreen Rd., next to the DMV, on Aug. 13 at noon. Before that, we will gather at 10 a.m. at Tooby Memorial Park to walk his favorite hike from Kimtu to Benbow on that same day.
