Current Events: The Happy Camp Complex has been divided into two zones. The Type 1 California Interagency Incident Management Team will manage the east zone and the Type 2 Southern California Incident Management Team will manage the west zone.
The Frying Pan Fire is located in the west zone of the complex. It is currently 20,753 acres and 10 percent contained. The inversion over the fire is expected moderate fire activity again in the morning hours preventing significant growth.
The Faulkstein Fire is currently 1,917 acres and remains 0 percent contained. It is located in the east zone of the complex. The Type 1 Team is scouting the fire and developing a fire suppression strategy. The Faulkstein is currently burning in a north- northwest direction towards Huckleberry Mountain and Grider Ridge.
Both fires will burn into the 2002 Stanza Fire burn area, which will help temper fire behavior.
Weather and Fire Behavior: High pressure is expected to build off the north coast of California, gradually shifting east over the fire area on Tuesday. It will bring a drying trend through Friday along with light east and northeast winds. The hottest and driest days will be Tuesday and Wednesday. A thermal trough may migrate westward over the west coast which could increase the easterly wind speeds during the middle of the week. Expect smoke, with inversions breaking around 1p.m.
Safety: Firefighters and their vehicles are present along Highway 96 and the Scott River Road. Motorists should slow down and limit distractions to help keep everyone safe when driving through the fire areas.
Air quality along the Klamath River drainage is affected by smoke from the Frying Pan and Faulkstein Fires. For more information about air quality in the area, please visit: http://californiasmokeinfo.blogspot.com/
A Clean Air Respite Center is available at the Karuk Tribe Senior Nutrition Center in Happy Camp (64101 Second Avenue). The center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and will remain open longer if needed due to smoky conditions.
An Evacuation Advisory, issued August 13, 2014, continues for residents of Happy Camp along China Grade Road from Elk Creek Bridge to Frying Pan Creek. China Grade Road is open to residents only.
