ARCATA -- After watching the lead evaporate due to bad hops and poor fielding decisions, the Humboldt Steelheads were in a bind against the Medford River Dogs in game one of Saturday twinbill.

But, with one swing of his bat, Lee Hawkins erased the 4-4 tie and made all the nervous tension go away.

Ripping a single that allowed teammate Brad Morgan to score from second in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Steelheads gained a 5-4 lead and pitcher Kevin Ayers made sure Medford would get no closer striking out the final two batters for the victory.

But the River Dogs got a measure of revenge in the nightcap as they took advantage of a bevy of Steelie errors for a 12-4 victory.

Despite the loss, Hawkins shined for Humboldt going 3-for-3 from the plate.

The Steelheads and River Dogs are set for an 11 a.m. meetin today at the Arcata Ball Park.
