The 5th Annual College of the Redwoods Athletics Dinner and Sports Auction will be held on Thursday, August 14, at the Adorni Center. The Dinner and Sports Auction is a benefit for CR student athletes and their sports programs. This year’s event will honor former CR coach Jim Sylvia. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. with a no-host Social and Silent Auction, dinner at 6 p.m. followed by the honoring of Jim Sylvia and the live auction at 7 p.m.
Jim Sylvia came to College of the Redwoods in 1966. He served as the CR head baseball coach in 1966, cross country coach in 1966 and from 1971-1975, and assistant football coach in 1967 and 1968. He is best known for starting the CR wrestling program in 1966. His teams finished 1st or 2nd in Golden Valley Conference wrestling 9 of the 10 years he coached. He was named Golden Valley Conference Coach of the Year four times. He was also named Northern California Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1976. His teams won four California Junior College Small School State Championships. During this period he coached numerous individual conference and state champions including six All Americans. Sylvia was inducted into the College of the Redwoods Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.
Tickets for the Dinner and Sports Auction are $60 for a single person, $100 for a couple or $400 for a table. Tickets can be obtained by calling the CR Athletic Department at 476-4213 or 476-4242.
