The Redway Community Services District board of directors has approved a contract with Waterworks Engineering of Redding to design the modifications and construction plans required for improvements to Redway’s water treatment plant and additional water storage. The plans will include the infrastructure needed for a new steel water tank that will provide an additional 600,000 gallons of water storage. The basic infrastructure of the Redway water treatment plant is over 34 years old. Over all these years the growth within the Redway District, as well as the attrition to the components of the water treatment, distribution, and storage structures requires this comprehensive evaluation and upgrade to these systems.

In December of 2007, Redway Community Services District completed an application for financial assistance from the California Department of Public Health (State Revolving Fund) to increase the production and storage capacity of the water system. Redway’s staff continues to seek other grant funding to assist in the financing of this approximately $2.5 million project. The proposed project will erect a new steel water tank, make seismic retrofits to the existing storage tank, and increase water treatment capacity.

Following the discovery of reduced flows into the water plant intake system, an addendum to the application was submitted in August 2008 to include modifications that would increase the capacity of the raw water intake system. These modifications will allow sufficient flow during periods of severe drought such as we experienced this year. The goal of this project is to increase water treatment plant capacity by 100 percent and to increase potable water storage by 600,000 gallons.

When this project is complete, Redway residents and businesses will also have improved fire protection due to the increased storage capacity. Additionally, Redway’s water system will be better prepared to provide water during prolonged dry periods, while ensuring adequate water supply for new connections to meet projected growth of our community.
