This Friday is the annual 4th of July celebration in Benbow. The Garberville-Redway Area Chamber of Commerce will once again be putting on a fantastic fireworks show at dark, which is usually between 9:30 and 10 p.m. in the lot next to the Benbow golf course.

Families are encouraged to make a day of it and bring food, drink and picnic supplies down to Benbow Lake State Recreation Area. Barbecues are available at the park. Parking in the park is limited on a first-come, first-served basis and there is a day-use fee of $8 per vehicle. Shuttle busses will be provided to and from the show for a $2 donation per person beginning at around 6:45 p.m. until around 9 p.m. Return busses will run from after the event until everyone is taken back to town.

This event is very expensive to put on and the chamber asks you to think about making a donation to ensure it continues. Thanks to donations made during the raffle and silent auction at the annual dinner, they made a good start at covering the cost. There are also donation jars around the community. This year the chamber is partnering with Thai Thai BBQ at two local festivals -- the Redwood Run and Reggae on the River.

If you would like to make a donation, please make checks payable to Garberville-Redway Area Chamber of Commerce and mail them to P.O. Box 445, Garberville, CA 95542, stop by the office in the Redwood Center Mall in Garberville, or you can make a donation online and find out more information at http://www.garberville.org/4th-of-july-fireworks.htm.

This is a fun holiday event for the whole family. Please do not drink and drive. If you need a ride, ask for one before you get behind the wheel, or ride the shuttle bus home. Please leave your pets at home in a safe environment where they will not be scared by the fireworks.

This is an exceptionally dry year and please don't set off fireworks near any dry grass or structures. We want everyone to have a great holiday and celebrate our country's independence.
