In “town,” whichever that may be, we all live our lives, conduct business, and raise our families. At the GRACC we hear a lot of concerns from our business owners and their employees, parents, and tourists about the condition of town. Tourists are afraid, disgusted, and not interested in coming back. Locals feel the same way and fear for the safety of their children as they go to and from school.
While we love the hustle and bustle of town, at times it is too much. Walking through people practically camping on the sidewalks, smoking everything in plain sight and blowing smoke in the faces of those passing by, leaving litter and cigarette butts everywhere. It is just not acceptable for our local beliefs and goals. It is not how we, as a community, want to be seen or remembered.
We are not trying to be the solution to all problems, we just need to do our part. Therefore, we hope that you join us and support us in our efforts to clean things up. We have started a few projects and ask that you participate in some way. We have posters and notices for your business windows (email us and we will get you copies of no smoking, no loitering, etc. signs with the GRACC logo).
Our Merchant Guild, which takes care of cleaning our public walkways, is going strong. We are pressure-washing sidewalks and, although it is a slow process, we believe it will be worth the effort. Our recycling bins are being emptied more regularly and being cleaned as well. We are asking other organizations to join us in our efforts and will continue to promote the overall wellbeing of our Southern Humboldt community.
We are open to ideas and suggestions. You can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Call the chamber office at 707-923-6213, or come by the office and speak to a representative of the chamber. We will also be on KMUD Oct. 29 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. to answer questions and take suggestions. Please take the time to listen and call in to voice your support of a clean, healthy, and safe community.
