To the Editor:

It’s a beautiful drive along the bluffs between Redway and Garberville. Soaring birds ride the thermals, the lovely Eel River winds it way to the sea. This view is a daily reminder of why we live here.

Many people walk and bike this roadway every day. More people would enjoy this experience if it were not so dangerous to do so. The posted speed limit is 55 mph along the bluffs. There is little room for escape on the sometimes non-existent road shoulders.

Drivers are distracted for so many reasons. Talking, texting, gawking, pre-occupation - the list is endless.

Widening the road is too expensive in this economy, lowering the speed limit is free.

The distance from Evergreen Rd. to Blue Star Gas is 0.6 miles. Lowering the speed from 55 mph to 40 mph will cost a driver nine seconds of time. It may save a life.

Contact Humboldt Count Roads at 445-7421. Let them know how you feel.

It’s only nine seconds.
