Dian Pecora has been a nurse for almost 40 years. And now, her willingness to go beyond the usual duties of a nurse is getting some special attention.

Pecora was recognized recently by the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing with an Excellence in Clinical Nursing Practice Award.

She was nominated by her peers and her accomplishments confirmed by an awards task force and the board of directors of the society. Pecora was praised as a highly skilled and capable public health nurse in rural Southern Humboldt. Her peers described her as innovative and committed to excellence for the most vulnerable.

”I’m very honored and wish to thank the Omicron Omega chapter of the Honor Society of Nursing for this award. I appreciate the support, encouragement and recognition they offer for local nursing leadership and clinical skills. I also want to thank Michelle Kelly, HSU Nursing instructor for nominating me for this award,” Pecora said.

Pecora’s leadership skills are also being praised. She was the administrator for the Southern Humboldt Community Hospital District from 1986-96. During this time, she spearheaded numerous programs and projects including a campaign

Her activities as a rural health care leader were featured in several healthcare magazines. In 1992 she received the Annual Rural Healthcare Leadership Award from the California Hospital and Healthcare Association.

She has been a Senior Public Health Nurse for the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services since 1996. Most of that time has been spent in Southern Humboldt but she recently accepted a Supervising Public Health Nurse position in Eureka and is in the process of moving to Eureka.

”Dian has served our communities in ways that go beyond a resume or a plaque on the wall. We are very grateful for her leadership in public health nursing and very proud that she has been honored by an international nursing organization,” said Alexandra Wineland, Public Health Branch director.

Pecora is a native of Stanley, North Dakota and received her Bachelor of Science of Nursing Degree at the University of North Dakota in 1969.
