The Senior Center’s next goals are to obtain a generator with automatic transfer switch, replace the air conditioning and heating unit and replace the floor in the kitchen and dining room. The center will continue to seek funding for these important facility upgrades. The Healy Center board has identified needed corrections to their building that will enhance the likelihood that grant money can be available for future improvements.
One important issue was a power limitation and lack of additional breaker spaces in the electrical panel.
”We needed a 200A panel that can accommodate a transfer switch that would allow an emergency generator to power the facility during an outage,” said board member Bernice “Whitey” Fladen recently.
The board worked together with Kelly Larson (Solar Kelly), a local electrical contractor, to complete the work. Since the facility runs a meal program, there are immediate refrigeration needs.
”We had to work quickly so there was no food spoilage,” Kelly said. “We worked with Heather Walker at the county planning department who arranged for a specially timed inspection so that we could work when the center was closed and get the power back on as soon as possible. Marv Richards of PG&E and Nick McBurney from the Humboldt County planning department made their necessary visits so that the installation happened easily. Healy Center board members Bernice “Whitey” Fladen, Jim Hoeffer and Gary Wellborn showed up to assist in the installation. It was a team effort and I am grateful to all that cooperated to make this happen so easily.”
