Sister: Suspect in Dinsmore slaying was victim’s former foster child

The 17-year-old suspect accused of murdering 68-year-old Dinsmore resident Richard Falk earlier this month was Falk’s former foster child, the victim’s sister Patti Falk confirmed Friday.

Richard Falk was found dead of gunshot wounds in front of his Buck Mountain home shortly after midnight on Oct. 6.

Duane Gillespie, 17, pleaded not guilty to Richard Falk’s murder in juvenile court earlier this month.

Though Gillespie is a juvenile, the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office previously released his name and announced its intent to have him tried for murder as an adult. Gillespie is set to appear in Humboldt County Superior Court on Nov. 28 where a judge is set to decide whether to transfer him out of juvenile court into criminal court.

Gillespie has also pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree burglary relating to a separate incident that allegedly took place in Arcata on Sept. 30.

A second juvenile suspect in the case has been arrested, but District Attorney Maggie Fleming declined to identify the suspect or answer questions this week regarding this case. Fleming previously said she also plans to try the second suspect as an adult.
