Help count yellow-legged frog eggs

With the Eel River dropping and warming, the yellow-legged frogs are getting ready to reproduce in the margins of the river. Sarah Kupferberg will be conducting her annual census of the South Fork Eel River at Benbow. Volunteers are welcome to come and learn how to count yellow-legged frog egg masses on May 13 at 10 a.m. There are several species of yellow-legged frogs in California and most have a protected status because of declining populations. Kupferberg focuses on counting egg masses because other life-stages of the frog is difficult to count — tadpoles are too numerous and adults are secretive about their locations. Those who plan to volunteer in the count should wear river shoes and be prepared to wade if necessary. Polarized sunglasses are also helpful for cutting glare when counting the egg masses. For more information, call 707-223-7200.
