Tractor spills lumber onto 101

On 04/10/2017 at approximately 1425 hours, a 2009 Kenworth tractor/trailer combination hauling lumber driven by John Maxwell Heron was traveling south on US-101, approximately one mile south of Sorenson Road. For reasons still under investigation, Heron turned the Kenworth to the right. The Kenworth traveled off the west roadway edge and up a dirt embankment causing the tractor trailer combo to “jackknife” and the lumber to spill into roadway blocking all lanes. US-101 was closed between Mattole Road and Sorenson Road for approximately three hours and traffic was diverted onto SR-254 (Avenue of the Giants). As a result of the collision, Heron sustained minor injuries and was transported to Redwood Memorial Hospital by City Ambulance of Eureka.

Cal Fire, Redcrest Fire Department, and City Ambulance assisted with medical aid. Cal-Trans assisted with closing US-101 and traffic control.

This incident remains under investigation by the Garberville CHP Office.
