Shooting suspect pleads not guilty to one count of murder

Matthew Aaron Brown

The main suspect in the recent fatal shootings in the Rancho Sequoia Drive area pleaded not guilty today to one count of murder with two special allegations of being a felon who intentionally discharged a firearm that resulted in a person's death, according to Assistant District Attorney Kelly Neel.

Matthew Aaron Brown, 30, is suspected of fatally shooting Alderpoint resident Neil Decker, 49, on July 18 in a reported dispute over personal property, and Rancho Sequoia resident Scott Johnson, 57, on Monday. Brown was arrested at 6 a.m. Tuesday by the sheriff's office SWAT team.

As to why Brown was only charged with one count of murder, Neel said she could not comment specifically, but that "the second death is still under investigation."

Brown is set to appear in court again on July 30 for an intervention hearing and Aug. 5 for a preliminary hearing.
