Press release from the Fortuna Fire Protection District:
The Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of heavy smoke seen at the Sequoia Gas Co. propane yard on Pond Street in Fortuna at 8:05 pm yesterday evening. Due to initial reports being unclear as to the source of the smoke, 12th Street, Newburg Road and both on and off ramps from Hwy were closed off with assistance from Fortuna Police Dept. and CHP. 101 to 12th Street were closed off with assistance from Fortuna Police Dept. and CHP.
Smoke was found to be coming from the shop building at the Sequoia Gas yard, arriving units were able to quickly mount an offensive fire attack, gaining control of the fire inside with-in approximately fifteen minutes. The cause of the fire was determined to have been a propane leak on a refrigerator that had been brought in for repair and was being tested. There were no injuries reported, damage was limited to a small portion of the interior of the building, there was however extensive smoke damage throughout the structure.
