Arcata City Councilman Shane Brinton to resign

Arcata City Councilman Shane Brinton announced at the start of tonight's council meeting that he would be stepping down Friday to devote more time to family matters.

"I really wish that I didn't have to resign," Brinton said.

His announcement triggered a discussion as to whether the council would appoint a replacement or ask voters to fill the seat in the November election. Brinton voiced support for the latter.

Brinton was first elected to the council in 2008 at the age of 21. Re-elected after running unopposed in 2012, he was selected by a unanimous vote of the council to serve as mayor for the following year. His current term would have ended in 2016.

Brinton, an Arcata native, previously served three years on the Northern Humboldt Union High School board, to which he was elected at age 18.
