The monthly government food commodities provided by Food for People in Eureka and distributed by volunteers at the Food Pantry located on Locust at the Garberville Community Presbyterian Church will be available beginning on Wednesday, June 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. and thursday, June 19 from 10:30 a.m. to noon If your income falls within the government income guidelines, you are eligible. The commodities for this month are beef stew, noodles, canned potato slices, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, whole grain rotini pasta, shelf stable milk, vegetable soup, breads, dairy and various fruits and vegetables.
Individuals are asked to "self-certify" that they are eligible by signing in. Please bring identification with your local address. If you are picking up for a homebound person, you must have a consent form each month from them with their name, address, the number in their family, income, and authorization. We ask that individuals or families try to come only once a month to help us serve as many households as possible – but if you need food, please come. A household may receive commodities only one time per month but we do have some emergency food donated by local residents and merchants. With the festival and marijuana season upon us, travelers need to realize that we may not be able to provide much – there are just so many travelers these days. Please look elsewhere for food.
The produce distribution happens every second Tuesday – so mark your calendars for July 8 – from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Pantry and 12:30 – 2 p.m. at the Redway Baptist Church. It is a great way to stretch your food resources.
We want to thank Ray's Food Place, Shop Smart, and Chautauqua for the regular donations they make regularly to the Pantry. Thank you to the letter carriers for their food drive last month – over 800 pounds of food were donated by you – our local community. And thank you to each community member for donating food as you are able. It is essential to our ability to serve all of the needy folk in our communities.
The Food Pantry is usually open every Tuesday and Thursday 10:30 a.m. – noon, and Wednesdays 2 – 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed for back up on all three days. Anyone wishing to donate food for the Food Pantry program or who has an idea of how to improve the distribution program should talk to the volunteers. We welcome any produce in good condition from your home garden. We need large paper shopping bags and egg cartons. For more information, please call Patti at 223-2430.
