The following is a press release from the Humboldt Bay Fire District issued today:
Today at approximately 2:10 a.m., Humboldt Bay firefighters were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 1420 4th Street in Eureka, the Christie's Motel. A first alarm assignment consisting of three engines, one ladder truck, and two chief officers were dispatched to the incident. In addition, Arcata Fire Protection District responded an engine company to assist in coverage of HBF's jurisdiction. Initial reports provided to the City of Eureka dispatch center indicated this was a mattress on fire adjacent to the Hotel. First arriving fire officers observed approximately eight mattresses, numerous pieces of furniture, and other debris well involved with fire directly adjacent to the hotel. The fire was contained in approximately 15 minutes, and full fire control was achieved in approximately one hour. An engine and truck company plus one chief officer were committed to the incident while other engine companies were released to provide coverage for the Humboldt Bay Fire response area.
No injuries to any civilians or fire personnel were reported, and structural fire damage was limited to exterior stucco siding, with no fire damage to the interior of the motel.
The cause of the fire is suspicious and remains under investigation.
