Humboldt Bay Fire officials are fighting to a large structure fire in Eureka today with heavy brown smoke and visible flames.
Battalion Chief Chris Emmons said when crews arrived on scene at 1031 Fourth Street at 12:10 p.m., there was smoke coming from second floor windows and eaves of the two-story house, with an initial report of someone inside.
"Crews went inside and determined nobody was inside," Emmons said.
The fire was a three-alarm fire and Arcata Fire was called out to assist. Scanner traffic indicates at 1:20 p.m. there is minimal smoke still coming from the hole in the attic.
The California Highway Patrol have been called in to help redirect traffic from 4th and R streets, 5th and J streets, M and 6th streets, and through Old Town.
Emmons said there is significant damage to the front and middle of the building, with a partial collapse to the middle section.
