Varsity boys beat Ferndale in tiebreaker; South Fork 53, Ferndale 44

The South Fork varsity boys hosted the Ferndale Huskies in a tiebreaker game for third place in the Little 4 Conference on Monday, Feb. 17. The Cubs fell behind early 14-10 in the first quarter but took control of the game in the second outscoring the Huskies 21-4 to finish the half up by 13. Christian Alatorre lit up the scoreboard for 21 points on the way to the win. The Huskies were able to cut the lead to nine by the end of the game but it was all but wrapped up at halftime.

The scoring went back and forth in the second quarter as the teams traded baskets in the first two minutes and the Huskies still holding onto an 18-17 lead. For the last five and a half minutes of the half it was all Cubs. South Fork finished the first half scoring 14 unanswered points. Ferndale took most of their shots in the quarter from beyond the three-point line and were unable to land any of them. The Cubs were able to break through Ferndale’s zone defense and scored most of their points from inside the paint.

South Fork continued their run in the 3rd quarter coming out of the break on a 7-2 run to take their lead to the largest margin of the game up 38-20. The game was well in hand heading into the 4th with the Cubs holding an 11-point lead and the Huskies never really challenged them for the final period. Troy Langley scored 13 and Joey Wittlake scored 10 to lead South Fork scorers behind Christian Alatorre. The three combined for 44 of the Cubs 53 points as they beat Ferndale and earned a berth in the Dick Niclai Tournament.
