On January 2, 2013 at the age of 90, Adell Allen Hawks released the hands of her loved ones and reached out for the hands of her Lord and peacefully went home.
Adell was born in Washington D.C. to Walter and Ethel Atwell on June 12, 1922. At the age of 5, the family moved to Southern California. Here she met and married the love of her life Robert J. Hawks in July, 1938.
The couple moved to Weott, in Humboldt County, California in 1947 with two little ones, Gary and Diane. A third, Richard, was added later in 1952. Their first home in Weott was a tent. Many lifelong friends were made during this time.
They bought Twin Oaks Ranch in Weott in 1958. After Bob passed away in 1974, she continued to run the ranch with the help of friends and her son Rick, until she moved to Fortuna in 1979.
Her faith was very important to her as was her church family. She attended Weott Christian Church and Hydesville Community Church. Her services included Sunday school teacher, nursery, VBS, greeter and hosting Bible studies and events in her home until she was in her late eighties.
She was very proud of her "little" family including children, Gary Hawks, Diane Hawks, Ray and Richard Hawks. She was a grandma to Debra Hawks Rinkor, Jeffery and Jerrold Hawks; great grandma to five; great-great grandma to five; and auntie to numerous nieces and nephews.
She loved being a pen pal and Pink Lady at Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna and anything that had to do with eating. The past three years found her having difficulties related to dementia. Rick and wife, Sherry, devoted their time to making sure she was lovingly cared for and tried to make her days happier.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; grandson, Jerrold; and five siblings.
Memorial Services will be held later in June. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Humboldt in her name.
