Longtime College of the Redwoods defensive coordinator Mike Cox has been named the college’s head football coach.
"Mike is an outstanding football coach," CR Athletic Director Joe Hash said. "He has a great mind for the game. He was also an exceptional lineman as a player at Arcata High, CR and Humboldt State University."
Tino Romero, who has served as CR’s head football coach for the past two years, will remain at the college as a full-time employee in the athletic department.
Hash emphasized that the coaching change had nothing to do with Romero’s performance, which he praised.
"We really appreciate the fact that Tino spent two years as head coach improving the quality of our program with dedication and hard work," Hash said. "The team is definitely moving in the right direction. But the college has been struggling to figure out funding for coaches in recent years. This is a decision made in very difficult budgetary times that allows CR to appoint an existing full-time faculty member and coach to lead the football team."
Next fall will be Cox’s twenty-third year with CR’s football program. In his career, he has coached for a total of 37 years.
As a player in his sophomore season at CR in 1972, he played on an undefeated state champion squad and was selected First-Team All-State and First-Team All-American. Cox joined Humboldt State for two seasons in 1974 and 1975, where he was a two-time All-Conference lineman and selected as Second-Team Little All-Coast. After HSU, Cox signed as a free agent with the Denver Broncos in the National Football League in 1976.
Following his playing career, Cox spent five years coaching the defensive line at HSU from 1976-1981, then spent the next two years coaching at College of the Sequoias. Cox was the offensive line coach at Taft Junior College for two seasons, helping the team to back-to-back national championship games, winning one. Cox then went back to Sequoias as offensive line coach for six seasons, before taking a job as offensive line coach and head track and field coach at Merced College. He was hired at CR in 1991.
