Report of traffic accident leads to 60 pounds of pot

An arrest by the California Highway Patrol on Tuesday, Jan. 8 netted more than 60 pounds of marijuana.

According to CHP officer Mike Phillips, a Garberville CHP officer was responding to a report of a vehicle accident off Old Briceland Road, south of the Summerville area, when he was passed by a truck towing a trailer on a narrow road at about 12:30 p.m.

Phillips said the officer had his window down and noticed the "overwhelming" odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

The officer stopped the vehicle, driven by Chester Clark, 32, and performed a search of the trailer, which revealed storage containers full of dried, unpackaged marijuana.

Phillips said Clark was arrested and transported to the Humboldt County jail on suspicion of cultivation of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sale.

The marijuana and the report has been turned over to the Humboldt County Drug Task Force for further investigation, Phillips said.
