Lady Cubs JVs take down St. Bernard’s

South Fork’s JV girls won their first game of the season Thursday night in Miranda, defeating league rival St. Bernard’s 40-33. The girls are now 1-1 in Humboldt Del Norte Little Four Conference play and have set what looks to be the realistic goal of finishing the season with a winning record in conference play.

"It was great," said head coach Taylor Morrow. "This is exactly what we’ve been working towards."

The Lady Cubs had lost twice before this season to the Crusaders at tournaments, and had come close to beating other teams a few times but not managed to put all the pieces together until Thursday night.

"I told the girls it would be a rough early season and that the games that really mattered would be after Christmas break when we got into league. That’s the next level, those are the must wins."

After losing by only one point on the road in Hoopa last week and defeating the Crusaders soundly, the JVs are "living up to our expectations," said Morrow.

Three players had their best games of the season. Sophomore DJ Sterling took command of the game in the second quarter, scoring 12 of her season high 22 points. "DJ’s intensity owned the game," said Morrow.

Sophomore Kylee Teasley also had a season high-16 points in the game, including three 3-pointers. "I gave her the green light when I saw that they weren’t coming out to guard her." Teasley’s ball handling and distribution were also confident and consistent throughout the game.

Sophomore Lily Farrell was the floor general for the Cubs. On offense she read the floor and dished from her well-paced left-handed dribble and on defense she caused countless turnovers in her role at the top of a half-court trap that stopped the St. Bernard’s attack in its tracks repeatedly throughout the contest.

"We needed everything from all eight players," said Morrow, pleased with the entire team’s contribution. The JVs will face McKinleyville on Tuesday on the road and then take on their next HDN opponent Ferndale on Friday in Ferndale.
