Wade Johnson memorial fund benefits Redway School

Wade Owen Johnson was born in Garberville on March 12, 1958 and passed away on January 5, 2010. He was the great-grandson of Nicholas Johnson, who came to Eureka in 1883 from Oslo, Norway.

Wade was a kind and gentle person who is missed by his family and friends. His parents, Jim and Marie Johnson of Garberville, created the Wade Owen Johnson Memorial Fund at the Humboldt Area Foundation in Wade’s memory to aid the teachers of Redway Elementary School. The funds are to go towards the purchase of teaching aids, supplies, and programs for the students at the school.

The funds will be used in the following manner:

o The funds will be equally divided between grades being taught in each of the grant years at Redway Elementary School.

o The teachers for the current grant year will make the expenditure decisions for their classes.

o The school board will review the expenditures to ensure that the donor’s guidelines are followed and if approved, send confirmation to the business manager to make disbursements.

o All funds will be received and tracked by the business manager of Redway Elementary School.

o The Family Resource coordinator or principal will ensure a public notice regarding the gift and use of the funds will occur as an annual press/news release.

o The business manager will require a copy of the prior year’s press release before making funds available for the current year.

The fund of $112,000 establishes an annual payment from the interest accrued during the year. In 2012, a payment of $2,280 was awarded to the Redway School teachers. The money was used to purchase needed items for their classrooms.
