Karl Denson feature entertainer at Black & Red Ball

The annual Black & Red Ball is back with a bang. The 2013 Black & Red, on Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Mateel Community Center, will feature the funk, R&B, and hip-hop sounds of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe with special guest Motherlode, a new, Arcata-based funk and Afro-beat band.

Karl Denson first came to prominence as a member of Lenny Kravitz’ band and has since shared the stage doing vocals, sax and flute with acts as diverse as Jack Johnson, D’Angelo, James Brown, Dave Matthews Band, Michael Franti and Spearhead, The Allman Brothers, Keene and Maroon 5.

Denson’s latest release, Brother’s Keeper, which he says is a "culmination of all my life’s work so far" continues his artistic evolution and espouses his simple worldview that we should be "loving each other, having fun and taking care of each other." He’ll be doing just that at the Black & Red Ball at the Mateel.

(Also, as part of this "Black & Red weekend" there will be a special monthly Comedy Cabaret kicking off festivities the night before the Ball on Friday, Feb. 1 with one of Mateel’s favorite comedians, Dax Jordan and other entertainment to be announced next week.)

Doors open for the Black & Red Ball at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2 with dinner available. Music begins at 8 p.m. with Arcata’s own Motherlode. For more information visit Mateel.org or call the Mateel office at (707) 923-3368.
