Kids and parents excited about new playground

To the Editor:

The families of Little Redwoods Preschool were so happy to have another great option for childcare in this community. This summer a discussion started about how awesome it would be to provide a playground for our children at the preschool. Knowing the preschool could not afford to construct a playground without additional support, a parent association was formed and fundraising efforts began. All the proceeds that have been collected go directly to the new playground and indoor climbing structures.

We would like to thank all the parents, teachers, and children who attended the meetings, baked treats for the bake sales, tabled in the cold, and generously donated their time and money. Thank you also to the parents, grandparents and friends who provided additional pledges for the children.

Much appreciation goes out to the stores who allowed us to kick off our fundraising efforts with donation jars at their check stands: Redway Feed and Garden Supply, Dazey’s, Sylvandale Gardens, Ray’s Food Place, Legend of Bigfoot, Myers Flat Store and Li’l Sproutz.

Thank you to the Community Credit Union for allowing us to display our quilt and everyone who purchased tickets. Big thanks to Alicia and Alex for not only providing but delivering the firewood to the winners of the firewood raffle. Thanks to Shop Smart and Jacob Garber Square for allowing us to have bake sales in front of your establishments and to all who indulged their sweet tooths.

Our December dinner and auction was a huge success thanks to the parents and teachers (Shane, Cortney, Deborah, Alicia, Mandi, Jenny, Katelynn, Dave, Adona, Alicia, Sathya, Jessica, Samantha and Cynthia) who planned, shopped and volunteered to bake lasagna, bread, and man the event. This event truly owes its success to the parents, grandparents and friends who came out to eat some lasagna and bid at the silent auction.

Much appreciation to all the local business who kindly donated auction items: Bombshells Beauty Bar, Cecil’s, Humboldt Hunnies Day Spa, Mateel Café, Mateel Community Center, Garberville Theatre, Randall’s Sand and Gravel, We Dig It, GreenWired, Jim’s Quality Quick Lube, Natures Baby Blankets, Redway Cellars, Pura Vida, Legend of Bigfoot, Collett’s Humboldt Honey, Holly’s Home Sewn, Annika Hogan, Who’s Your Barber, Lost Coast Crossfit, Tumblestars, Sylvandale Gardens, Meadows Cafe and Humboldt Hydroponics. Please support them and shop locally this holiday season as they support our community time and time again.

With all these efforts we have almost reached our total fundraising goal. The indoor climbing structures for the butterfly and caterpillar classrooms have already been purchased. We plan to break ground this spring for the construction of a new natural outdoor playground that the children helped design, including a hill slide and a rainwater barrel with flumes.

All our fundraising efforts will culminate on Saturday, Jan. 12 as we celebrate with a Kid’s New Years Party at the Mateel Community Center. The children are so excited about the new playground and the party. May generosity and gratitude be continually reflected in the year to come.
