To the Editor:
California lieutenant governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement released after the horrible Connecticut tragedy on Friday, 12/14/12, that the time to talk about gun control is now.
I find it hard to believe that people cannot understand that evil criminals by the nature of what they represent will posses firearms despite the rule of law. The attempted success of the government’s control of firearms for honest California citizen’s only benefits those who would do harm to the innocent. The coward that perpetrated Friday’s tragedy was in illegal possession of the firearms.
Some would argue that if the weapons had not been immediately accessible, the incident would never have accrued. What if a select few school employees were properly trained in firearm use and had authorized emergency defensive firearm access?
The possibilities and conjecture exhibited by people after a significant horrible event seems to be a natural process. However, the facts remain the same. Evil people will always walk among us.
We have lived with firearms for over 230 years in these United States. The uses include obtaining food, sport and defense. Strict gun control laws this late in our country’s history will only turn honest citizens into dishonest citizens.
Given excessive government gun control restrictions; ask yourself if you would continue to exercise your gun rights to defend your property, family and life against those criminals or evil individuals who would attempt to take them away. I believe that your answer to this question would not surprise anyone.
Perhaps that is the way the first congress felt in 1791 when they adopted the first ten amendments to our United States Constitution.
Thank you for your attention.
