South Fork’s JV boys’ basketball team played in Ferndale’s tournament over the weekend and lost two games and won one bringing their record to 11-3 on the season.
Opening in a tough house against Ferndale Thursday night the Cubs fell 42-29 in one of their poorest offensive performances of the season. "We just had a bad shooting night," said head coach Doug Moody. "It happens. Our offense wasn’t aggressive enough and we had at least 25 turnovers." Freshman Armando Martinez was high scorer for the Cubs with 13 points and freshman Kevin Vandenack hit three 3-pointers.

On Friday night South Fork played Laytonville for the third time of the season, and Moody was able to get his bench a lot of playing time and keep the game competitive while the Cubs won 28-19. Sophomore Nick Way led the attack with 12 points, Sophomore Austin Rivers added 8 and freshman Ethan Wolf handled the ball well for the Cubs while scoring 5 points.

On Saturday the Cubs lost a shoot out with the Hoopa Valley Warriors 77-68. "This was a fast-paced exciting basketball game that could have gone either way," said Moody. Sophomores Cole Moody and Grant Wick each hit five 3-pointers in the game while Hoopa hit 10 of their own. Wolf again played well off the bench for the Cubs, scoring 5 points. Vandenack was strong as point guard against Hoopa’s high-pressure defense. "We played hard and I look forward to playing them again," said Moody.

To wrap up tournament action South Fork volunteered to fill in for a no-show team and played a scrimmage against Ferndale. Moody mostly used his bench players against Ferndale’s starters as the game started immediately after the exhausting Hoopa contest. South Fork lost the game 44-28 but bench players gained valuable experience that will come in handy as the season progresses.
The JVs will travel to Oakland to play College Prep today and then to St. Bernard’s on Friday before taking a break for the holidays.
