Golf tournament raises money for Backpacks for Kids

Members of the Humboldt Association of Realtors recently presented a $9,200 check to the Food for People’s "Backpacks for Kids" program. The proceeds were raised through HAR’s 18th annual Golf Tournament held in September at the Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville.

This donation will help Food for People’s child nutrition programs which bridges the hunger gap between home and school for Humboldt County’s low-income children. Last year, local kids consumed 50,000 snacks distributed through their after school snacks programs, consumed nearly 16,000 lunches during their summer lunch program and received more than 10,000 sacks of food through Backpacks for Kids, their weekend nutrition program.

Sixteen golf teams and nineteen hole sponsors participated in the "best-ball" tournament. This year’s tournament was highlighted by a golf ball drop fundraiser where over 250 balls were purchased and dropped from a boom truck.

More than $15,000 was netted during the pre-evening auction and day-long golf event. In addition to the main beneficiary recipient, $500 was also awarded to CASA of Humboldt as a beneficiary runner-up. Additional proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit the HAR scholarship and numerous community service projects throughout the county.
