South Fork’s volleyball team lost to Hoopa and then handed league leaders St. Bernard’s their first defeat of the season last week, bringing their record to 7-6 overall and 1-3 in Humboldt Del Norte Conference play.
Every set the Lady Cubs have played in league competition has been close, and the match against Hoopa was no exception. South Fork won the first two sets 27-25 and 25-20, but then lost 19-25, 17-25 in the next two. Their confidence was shaken and they lost the tiebreaker 8-15. The Lady Warriors served for straight aces in the decisive set.
On Thursday the Lady Cubs bounced back and defeated St. Bernard’s 26-24, 19-25, 25-23, 18-25 and 18-20.
"I was so pleased with how well they played together," said head coach Michelle Bushnell. "We moved some players around to adjust to St. Bernard’s attack and it worked. We got most of our serves in and kept our heads in the game."
Bushnell believes the team will build on the momentum gathered in the thrilling win and carry it through the remainder of the league season. This week they face Ferndale at home on Tuesday at 5:30 and Hoopa at home at 3:00 p.m. for Homecoming on Friday.
