South Fork’s girls’ soccer team lost to Eureka 4-0 on the road last week and then tied Rincon Valley Christian at home Saturday 0-0. The Lady Cubs’ are now 0-4-2 on the season.
South Fork gave up all four of Eureka’s goals in the first half as the young team adjusted to the defensive formation played against the dominant Big 5 school.
Senior co-captain and goalie Kathy Petersen was very strong, making a dozen saves while fellow senior co-captains Kennedy Burnett and Sammy Marino kept the team organized to fight off Eureka’s attack. The Lady Cubs held Eureka scoreless in the second half.
On Saturday the Cubs had the lion’s share of possession in the scoreless tie against Rincon Valley, but could not finish despite strong efforts from freshman striker Victoria Van Meter and freshman winger Sophie Depew.
Senior Brianna Finney was a strong offensive presence on the field and sophomore Ella Scott was a key to South Fork possession, as was freshman Alea Ahola.
This week the Cubs will host Fortuna on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then Del Norte on Saturday at 1 p.m.
